Phil Godman, nicknamed "Mad Phil" was born May 20, 1982 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Educated at Merchiston Castle School where he captained the rugby union side to victory in the Scottish Schools Cup. He signed a professional contract with Newcastle Falcons after leaving Merchiston. However, as the constant understudy to Jonny Wilkinson at Newcastle Falcons he moved to the Edinburgh Gunners in the summer of 2004. He represented Scotland at under 21, under 19 and under 18 levels before winning his first cap for the Scottish rugby union side as a replacement against Romania.
Godman initially remained first choice fly half under new coach Andy Robinson, but as of 2010 is not currently part of the Scotland squad.
